At King David Primary School, we believe that literacy is an essential life skill. Success in English not onlyprovides children with the skills and tools for learning but also equips them to communicate effectively in school, at home and in the wider world leading to greater opportunities in life. Our overarching aim for English, therefore, is to promote high standards of language and literacy by equipping pupils with a strong command of the spoken and written word.

We recognise that reading is a powerful medium through which children can develop their sense of self and empathy for others. Books and stories give children the opportunity to inhabit the lives of those who are like them while also giving them a window, from which to view the world beyond the familiar. At King David we consider it our role to expose children to the many different opportunities reading offers. We will ensure our pupils have the opportunity to explore a wide range of genres and authors – carefully and thoughtfully selected to stimulate interest, curiosity, progression and to further our children’s cultural appreciation.

Through our whole school curriculum, we aim to ensure our pupils recognise that English skills feed into all subjects and the personal interests of the children This helps build the children’s contextual awareness, develops understanding and deepens their intellect.
